1. This should be the page with all the great Data Warehouse great ideas. Sorry, it isn't.
I read in the Washington Post in the summer of 2004 that the Democratic National Committee has a database of 170 million names with 300 attributes.
Whatever the locals do, it should be working with support from National to State. This is too big. Work with them. This stuff costs a LOT of Money, a LOT of Time, and a LOT of Expertise.
2. I did database support for management reporting databases and SEC reporting databases at Microsoft for 3 years. There were about 20 people on the teams who created and maintained those internal applications. Many of the people were top caliber developers, testers and program managers.
A warning about software projects - a few top notch developers will get more done than 40 mediocre developers, period. There were similar projects with more people which were complete disasters.
Data warehouses are great black holes for staff salaries and staff time. This stuff is complex, even
IF everyone agrees on what is important, IF everyone agrees what is stupid, and IF people know how to do it well.
I will provide input for the Great Data Warehouse as soon as I get $150,000 up front, Yen, Euros, Gold or Dollars, for 6 months work. for me.
